Milestone 58 - Missing  last documented sighting 1963

*Above banner image was taken between Milestone 24 and The Ship Inn on the Lancaster Pike.

Milestone 58 was still there in 1963 as the newspaper clipping below mentions.  The Greenland Hotel/Tavern (1853)  described as West of Mill Creek and between Milestones 58 and 59  isn't pictured here and has since disappeared. Today you will find a Country Inn & Suites on the South side of the road and Dutch Wonderland on the North side. The marker would have been on the opposite side of the road from the Country Inn & Suites.

The Running Pump Tavern was established in 1799. It was known for the pump that always provided fresh water for any person or animal that stopped by. It was found on the north side of the pike near the 58 mile point.  It headed across the road and a little East on March 14, 1963. It settled at 2280 Lincoln Highway East traveling about 3/10 of a mile in all. It was saved by Mr. Clark who was willing to sell it to anyone willing to move it for 1 dollar and Joe Meyers who then committed over $25,000 to move it. A castle like structure is to be built in its old location. The Running Pump structure can now be found on the South side of the Highway , up on a hill and facing West. It sits between the Lancaster Host and Lapps Family Restaurant. The structure weighed 250 tons so it was quite an operation to move it. While moving it passed near the 58 Milestone.

Newspaper story from the Chester County Historical Society that covers the move of the Running Pump Inn in 1963.
