 Milestone 5

*Above banner image was taken across from Roughwood (The Lamb) East of the 15 milestone.

Milestone 5 is 1/5 mile West of City Line Avenue on the North side of the road.  Lankenau hospital is on the south side. The American Flag Inn and Tavern was near this marker. It was usually just called the Flag. On the R. Brooks map of 1806 it was labeled as the David Roberts Tavern. The Flag's sign was painted as an American Flag with 15 stars and 15 stripes. In 1823 the number of stripes was fixed back at 13. No pictures of the Inn seem to exist. It was gone by 1888 as an account from that date by John Roberts speaks of it in the past tense, "The Flag was is now..."

The Black Horse Tavern, sketched here, was described by Ness as being at the corner of City Line Avenue which places it East of the 5 Milestone.               * The above banner image was taken across from Roughwood (The Lamb)  just East of the 15 Milestone.

The Lower Merion Historical Society has a number of pictures of this tavern/inn.

Milestones 5 through 9 were all erected by Joseph Price and all 5 still stand today.
