Milestone 24       *Above banner image, Dogwood Blossoms,  was taken near St Paul's Episcopal Church west of Frazer, PA.

The History Club at the Church Farm School reset the 24 Milestone in December 2009.  It now sits on the south side of the road about .15 miles west of what is thought to be it's original location.

American forces probably retreated over the site of the future school after the Battle of the Clouds in 1777  leaving some artifacts behind, however the cannon tubes at Fort Mifflin came from a community service project at the school in the early 1970's lead by Howard Wright. To learn more about the battle go to  http://johnsmilitaryhistory.com/clouds.html

Below, the reset stone in Winter. The Chapel of the Atonement, 1927, sits in the background. The Wake-up and Victory Bell sits on the right.

Between the 24th and 25th Milestones was Summit Hall (1822) which was part of Springdale Farm. Mr. T.H.B. Jacobs purchased the farm in 1826 and his heirs would occupy the site for 113 years. When his grandson died at Summit Hall in 1938, leaving no heirs it was the  end of 186 years of Jacobs family living in West Whiteland Township. Summit Hall was torn down in the 1980's when the farm site was developed as a business park and no buyer could be found willing to move the home. There is now a Springdale Drive in what I assume was that area.

Also between the 24 and 25 Milestones  was the Wheat Sheaf (1808 - 1809), later the Sheaf of Wheat (1811 & 1815) and still later it was known as the West Whiteland Inn. It may also be the Jones Tavern. According to A History of West Whiteland  it was built within a year of the Pikes completion which would be 1795. It received a license every year until 1839. It no longer stands but the date of its demise is unknown. Sachse also mentions the Barley Sheaf but places it near the 26 mile point. this appears to be incorrect as he follows that entry by placing the new Ship Inn Tavern at the 27 mile point instead of 25 miles. There is also a Barley Sheaf Road near the 34 milestone so the name may have traveled there for a time as well. The West Whiteland Inn was also in an 1830's farmhouse at about the 27 1/2 mile point at some point.

A dairy cow taken from a quilt completed at the Church Farm school on the Bicentennial of our nation's founding in 1976. The boy who drew this square is John Standal. The quilt was stitched together by the housemothers, secretaries and teacher's wives.
