Milestone 41 - Damaged before 1952 picture but no worst now!*Above banner image was taken between the 45th and 46th missing milestones on the Lancaster Pike. It's looking from the TIER company southeast, The Mount Vernon, in turnpike days.

Just East of the 41st Milestone was the Sign of the Troop of Horses which got its first license in 1741 to sell "Rum, beer and syder" and later became the Sadsbury or Sadsburyville Hotel. The Wilmington Pike intersects with Lincoln Highway here. This Inn also served as the local post office in 1832.  Over the years it was known as Baer's, Kendigs Hotel (1808), The Sign of the Hoop, The Washington Inn, 1830 and Washington Hotel (1822 & 1834). This may also be the Washington Tavern that Sachse described as being west of  the 40 milestone.

The above link will take you to Chester County, PA. tavern petitions for the 1700 to 1923 time period. Look under George Kendig for the Troop of Horses for two of the years the tavern was licensed.

Midway between the 41 and 42 Milestones is Buck Run Inn. It sits just East of Old Mill Road on the North side of the Pike. According to the owner when the building was re-pointed a stone with the 1776 date was found. There doesn't seem to be any history of this building as an inn.
