Milestone 23 Missing

Its location was on the north side of Lincoln Highway, West of Swayne's Store. A little detective work matched up the house behind the milestone in the 1950's photo to a house four buildings West of A WaWa Convenience Store in Frazer. The milestone wasn't there.

The Steamboat Inn or Steamboat Station was about a 1/2 mile West of the 23 Mile Point. It was described as being at the corner of Route 29 and Lincoln Highway. The Steamboat was demolished in 1960 and the start to the Route 30 bypass was probably built over the site as well.

Above is the Steamboat Inn which was located at about the 23 1/2 mile point. Today in the same general area as the Steamboat Inn once sat is the White Horse restaurant, a former farm house. A Sheraton has enveloped the old farm house and it was incorporated into the restaurant so one can eat in 18th century charm. Perhaps a mile to the Northwest as the crow flies sits the real former White Horse Tavern at 480 Swedesford Road. Swedesford Road was part of the old Lancaster Road which was the first major East-West road through the area. It was established in 1722 and although now a private residence still stands. Milestones along this stretch of road would have indicated 26 miles (to Philadelphia) in front of the Horse with the Fox Chase Inn, to the West, having the 28 milestone between it and its barn. The Swedesford road milestones were of a different style than those on the turnpike.
