Milestone 49 - Missing

*Above banner image was taken behind Joel Ferree House , Paradise PA. The image on the right shows some of the remains of Joel's Gun Shop which he used to help supply weapons to Americans during the Revolution.

Roamers Campground is on the North side of the highway about where the milestone should be. Amos Slaymaker's Stagehouse and Tavern would also have been in the area although I didn't find it. It was described as being 14 miles East of Lancaster at Salisburyville which would place it around the 49 or 50 mile point. Sachse places Slaymaker's between the forty-eighth and forty-ninth milestones. That would put it between the Sign of the Rising Sun and Kinzer's Tavern. The sketch provided here  is based on a picture in The History of the Descendants of Mathias Slaymaker. The Slaymakers immigrated from Germany around 1710. Mathias and his relatives first settled in Lancaster City and later bought 1000 acres in Paradise Township. Their original surname was Schleiermacher which was shortened to Slaymaker after their arrival here.   There is also a picture of the Slaymaker Hotel in Lancaster on the Lancaster city page.   http://www.archive.org/stream/historyofdescend00slay/historyofdescend00slay_djvu.txt

The picture of Amos Slaymaker was taken from Find a Grave Photos. Mr Slaymaker lived from 1755 to 1837.

Kinzer's Station Tavern (1801) is located at 3572 East Lincoln Highway. Sachse placed it between the 49th and 50th milestones. It appears to be the same as Kinzer's  Tavern. The tavern was run by the Fisher family from 1945 until the early 1990's. A new family took over in 1992 and as of 2009 was still running it. The station part of the name refers to the days when passenger trains stopped at the back door. There was also a ticket office located there. The tracks are still there but the trains don't stop anymore.
