Milestone 45 - Missing for over 100 Years
Milestone 46 - Missing in 1952 and still not recovered
The former Mount Vernon sits about half way between the 45th and 46th milestones. According to Sachse it was West of the Chester County Line. He also said the inn stood at the intersection of the road from Christiana to Limeville. This may be what is now Mount Vernon Road. The wrap around porch and white stucco exterior shown in Sachse's 1912 picture are gone. The inside may have been gutted and redone but it and it's large barn to the West still stand. At one point, possibly in the 1950's this building was the sight of many dances. now the TIER company which provides its customers with the widest range of choices for waste management, transportation and environmental regulation compliance owns it. Below is the mount Vernon from the Southwest and Northwest in 2009. Link to learn more about TIER
The last 20 miles of the old Pike leading into Lancaster are in the heart of Pennsylvania Dutch Country. It provides a fascinating clash of cultures as traditional lifestyles come up against new beasts like automobiles. Once you get past the smell of manure in the fields it works because you get a chance to see many of the same crops grown in colonial times, such as tobacco. Below, a tobacco field.
Sachse's picture of the Mount Vernon from his book. Compare the picture to the two at left to see the changes in the buildings appearance today.
I have no information regarding the location of milestone 45 which is long gone. One could measure 2 miles from milestone 43 and 2 miles from milestone 47 and see if that puts you in the same area for the last general location of Milestone 45
Milestone 46 was probably somewhere along the Old Lincoln Highway which is where I placed the salmon stickpin. Its been missing for almost 60 years.
